LOS ANGELES ― Orange County Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals said Friday he was “disappointed and disturbed” by a secret log that Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputies kept for years on jail inmates and informants. The 1,157-page log has been kept under seal since it first surfaced about four months ago, but in court on Friday Goethals explained that it makes “clear” that a branch of the OCSD is “extensively” involved in dealing with informants in the jail.
His comments came during a hearing for the Scott Dekraai case, a high-profile mass-murder case already plagued by alleged misconduct by pros…

Kasey Warren turned herself in to police earlier this week on charges she had sex with two 16-year-old male students. Warren, 27, was a substitute teacher for the Carlisle County School System in Kentucky during the second half of the 2015 – 2016 school year. According to police, Warren met the two boys toward the end of that school year in Carlisle County, though the alleged sexual encounters took place in McCracken County on or around June 3 and June 14, after the school year had ended. Warren was not employed by Carlisle County at the time.
Upon her arrest, Warren was charged with one count of third-degree sodomy for the June 3 encounter, and two counts of third-degree rape…

In 2007, security camera footage surfaced of an intoxicated off-duty police officer, Anthony Abbate, punching and kicking a female bartender, Karolina Obrycka. Abbate was shown in the video punching and kicking Obrycka at Jesse’s Shortstop Inn on February 19, 2007, after Obrycka refused to serve him any more alcohol. Abbate was later arrested, charged with felony battery, and stripped of police powers after TV news stations aired the footage. The Chicago Police soon terminated Abbate from the force, but questions remained over the city’s handling of the case.
Further controversy arose when Abbate was allowed to enter his courtroom hearing through a side door, in order to shield himself from the press. Allegations surfaced that the police ticketed the vehicles of news organizations and threatened reporters with arrest. In the wake of this, Superintendent Cline announced that he would demote the Captain who gave the orders, and launch investigations into the actions of the other officers involved.
On April 27, 2007, 14 additional charges against Abbate were announced. These included official misconduct, conspiracy, intimidation, and speaking with a witness. Abbate pled not guilty to all 15 charges during a brief hearing on May 16, 2007.
Referring to Abbate, Superintendent Phil Cline stated, “He’s tarnished our image worse than anybody else in the history of the department.” The video of the attack has been viewed worldwide on 24-hour news channels and has garnered more than 100,000 views on YouTube. In the wake of this scandal and another similar scandal involving another videotaped police beating at a bar, Cline announced his retirement on April 2, 2007. While both men have denied it, some believe that Cline retired under pressure from Mayor Richard M. Daley. Daley has since announced a plan to create an independent police review authority to replace the current Office of Professional Standards, which is under the jurisdiction of the police department.
On April 30, 2007 a lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against the city of Chicago and Abbate and several other individuals by attorneys representing Obrycka. On November 13, 2012, a federal jury found that a “widespread code of silence” within the Chicago Police Department had allowed Abbate to feel that he could attack Obrycka without fear of reprisal. They also found that Abbate participated in a conspiracy to cover up the attack. The jury awarded Obrycka 0,000 in damages.
Abbate was convicted of aggravated battery, a felony, on June 2, 2009. Cook County Circuit Judge John J. Fleming rejected Abbate’s claims that he had acted in self-defense. However, since Obrycka testified that Abbate had not identified himself as an officer during the attack Abbate was acquitted of official misconduct charges. Abbate faced up to five years in prison for the attack. On June 23, 2009, Abbate received two years probation including a curfew between 8 pm and 6 am, mandatory attendance at anger management classes, and 130 hours of community service.
On December 15, 2009, Abbate was officially fired from the CPD after a mandatory review by the Chicago Civilian Police Board. The firing was a simple formality, as the CPD does not allow convicted felons to serve on the force.

Here are the crime stories making headlines today, August 16, 2016 …
A retired NYPD cop shot his two sons before killing himself. Retired Detective Irvin Noak, 61, was having a party at his home in Bellport, New York, on Sunday, when Suffolk County police say that he got into an argument with family members at around 11 P.M. When his two sons Aaron, 22, and Irvin Noak III, 30 – who live at the home with their father – intervened, Noak went into his bedroom, grabbed a handgun and shot the two boys before turning the gun on himself. Noak was rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center and was pronounced dead. His…

A jewelry store heist was foiled when the owner pulled a shotgun on would-be robbers at Joyeria Marlenes’ jewelry store in Fresno, California. The surveillance footage recorded the wanna-be jewelry thieves pretending to show interest in the merchandise. While one suspect asked clerk Noe Guzman about bracelets, the other suspect racked the slide of a handgun behind his partner’s back. Guzman said he moved to the side so that his uncle, the store owner who was in the back with his daughter and grandchild, could see that a robbery was in progress. The suspects were surprised when the owner came out from the back with a shotgun.
An armed gunmen was fatally shot in southeast Houston by a convenience store clerk’s son. Usman Seth was working at his father’s grocery store when a masked robber carrying a tactical firearm came into the store demanding his sister, who was at the cashier counter, give him all their money. Seth’s father handed him their store handgun and quickly shot the suspect, later identified as Sam Abugalboush, in the leg. Surveillance cameras caught the entire shootout on tape. Police arrived within minutes, but Abugalboush died at the scene.

In Milwaukee over the weekend, yet another black man with most of his life ahead of him was gunned down by the police. This has sparked calls for peace, and for a renewed national conversation about police misconduct and community trust.
Here are a few pictures:

http://democracynow.org – The national conversation on policing African-American communities is focused on Cleveland today after a major federal settlement and a controversial verdict. The Justice Department has reached an agreement with Cleveland over a pattern of what it calls “unreasonable and unnecessary” force by police. A probe last year found “chaotic and dangerous” abuse across hundreds of incidents. This comes just days after an acquittal in a case that helped launch the probe. On Saturday, Officer Michael Brelo was found not guilty of manslaughter for the fatal shootings of two unarmed African Americans in their car. In November 2012, Brelo was one of 13 officers who fired 137 rounds at Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams after a chase which began when officers mistook a backfiring car for gunshots. Officer Brelo personally fired 49 shots, at least 15 of them at point-blank range through the windshield after he climbed onto the hood of the car. In a verdict on Saturday, Judge John O’Donnell said he can’t prove Belo shot the fatal bullets, since 12 other officers also opened fire. O’Donnell also said Brelo had grounds to fear for his safety. We are joined by two guests: the Reverend Waltrina Middleton, a community organizer close to the families of Russell and Williams; and Alice Ragland, an activist with the Ohio Student Association, which has been organizing around the issue of police violence in Ohio.
