SOUTH MIAMI, FLORIDA — Bodybuilders Alex Paez and Milagros Cowan, have been charged for the second time in four years with animal abuse after three horses were found starving at their ranch in South Miami.

As of 2014, there is evidence that at least one of the horses was in good health. A year later, after the couple’s ranch was raided, they were found so malnourished their bones was visible. One of the horses’ hooves were overgrown so much he could barely walk.

According to Classicalite, Paz, 48, justified himself by saying the horses were a “little thin and just needed to be dewormed.”

The couple’s lawyer, Alexander Michaels also said the charges were not a ‘big deal,’ and that police should ‘spend more time on human victims, and child victims, than on horses who skipped a meal.’

Fortunately, there are some people who do actually care about animals.

After they were rescued, the horses were transferred to the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) where they have been eating regularly and recovering.

SPCA staff told the Miami Herald that the horses have gained weight and are friendly now, compared to when they first brought and were completely wild.

In a recent press conference, Sheriff Troy Nehls of the Fort Bend County Sheriff Department, told reporters the suspected motives behind texas mom Christy Sheats shooting and killing her two daughters, Madison and Taylor Sheats. Police interviewed the father, Jason, who is still living. Jason revealed that Christy was mentally ill, and that he believes she killed the girls to make him suffer. In the conference, Sheriff Nehls said: “Mr. Sheats stated Christy knew how much he loved Taylor and Madison and how much they loved him.” Nehls added that the police are looking at Jason as a victim in all of this, and said: “I think it’s just important that your thoughts and prayers go out with Mr. Sheats.”

The initiative to fix problems that have obstructed the enforcement of the death penalty in California has qualified for the ballot. The announcement is on the website of Californians for Death Penalty Reform and Savings.

Four years ago, the friends of murderers came within four percent of repealing the death penalty because they had the money to qualify an initiative while the forces of justice did not. Many people believed that the choice was therefore one between repeal and the status quo of a penalty that is never enforced.

Not this time. The status quo will be history come November, and the people have a clear choice between “end it” and …

Is the death penalty too expensive and ineffective to keep?

This November, California voters will have the chance to decide on that question by voting for or against a ballot initiative called SAFE (Savings Accountability Full Enforcement), which would replace the death penalty with life without possibility of parole as the state’s maximum punishment.

Putting the moral issues of the death penatly aside, SAFE proponents argue that California’s death penalty is costly to taxpayers and broken beyond repair.

“Over the last 32 years its cost California tax payers about 4 billion dollars to have the death penalty, and over that period only 13 executions have been carried out,” says LMU Law Professor Paula Mitchell.

Mitchell’s study, “Rethinking the Death Penalty in California,” shows that once the death penalty comes into play for a case, the legal costs skyrocket to an extra 4 million dollars per year, well above the cost to implement life without possibility of parole. Death penalty cases require more attorneys, more experts, and an automatic review by the California Supreme Court, making it a seemingly endless process.

“The average time on death row is now approaching 30 years,” says former San Quentin Death Row Warden Jeanne Woodford. “So we have more inmates on death row who have died by natural causes or by suicide.”

Opponents of SAFE, such as Legal Director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation Kent Scheidegger, say California simply needs to streamline its system to emulate the process in states like Virginia.

“We need to speed up the review process. We are currently spending far more than we need in both time and resources reviewing claims that have absolutely nothing to do with whether the guy committed the murder or not.” Scheidegger says.

Yet advocates for SAFE say that this would be a dangerous move, not to mention extremely costly. Mitchell argues that it would cost an extra 0 million per year to reform the existing system.

“And one of the dangers of this idea that we should just hurry and speed things up is that it could result in cases where someone who isn’t guilty or didn’t have a fair trial is being executed,” Mitchell says.

The FBI has just added a new woman to their infamous Top 10 Most Wanted list. Shanika S. Minor, 25, is wanted for the murder of Wisconsin’s Tamecca Perry, 23, who was nine-months pregnant and killed in front of her other two children. According to the FBI, Perry and Minor’s mother were neighbors in the same Milwaukee duplex.

“Apparently Minor believed that the victim had somehow disrespected her or her mother,” Special Agent Chad Piontek said. “It’s a fairly violent neighborhood.”
