Many of my thrillers are set where I grew up: the world-famous Catskill resort area in upstate New York. For 10 weeks in the summer, business people, store keepers, salesmen, and the like worked grueling hours to make a living. LANCASTER — A teenager was shot and killed at a house party in Lancaster early this morning, authorities said.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. Saturday at a residence in the 700 Block of East Avenue K, according to the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
Officers from three agencies responded to the scene.
The shooting happened after a confrontation erupted in the backyard of the home, witnesses said. Investigators were called to the scene regarding a juvenile being shot in the head, according to a Lancaster Station broadcast.
When officers from the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station descended on the scene, several partygoers could be seen running in every direction. Many of them appeared to be minors.
Deputies were able to detain close to 50 of the partygoers at the scene. They sat them on a curb and questioned them one by one. Many of them were released to the custody of waiting parents.
Nearly 50 partygoers were detained and questioned at the scene.
About a dozen were taken to the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station early Saturday morning for further questioning.
Later on, investigators said they still did not have any suspect information and were trying to get in contact with more witnesses.
The victim’s name is not being released pending notification of next of kin, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. ABC 7 reports he is high school junior, and the house party he attended was posted to facebook and several social media outlets.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Kevin Tatum of Compton, and the shooting is believed to be gang related, according to the latest report from the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
Guests were leaving the house party when a fight broke out and an unknown suspect produced and fired a hand gun, according to detectives. Tatum was hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN — The family of Deven Guilford, a teenager from Mulliken, Michigan who was shot by an Eaton County Sheriff’s sergeant earlier this year during a traffic stop, is suing the officer and the county after a prosecutor cleared the officer of wrongdoing.
Deven Guilford, 17, was driving on M-43 near Grand Ledge to go watch a movie at his girlfriend house on the evening of February 28.
Eaton County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jonathan Frost pulled Guilford over after Guilford flashed his bright lights at his car because he thought the sergeant’s headlights were on.
In a video recorded by the officer’s body camera, Frost repeatedly asked Guilford for his license. When it was evident the teen didn’t have his license with him, the sergeant asked Guilford to exit the car, saying he was under arrest.
Frost then told Guilford to lay down on his stomach, next to the car. Frost tried to handcuff him, but when the teen resisted, the officer tased him. According to Detroit Free Press, only one of the taser’s two probes connected, and Guilford was able to get on top of Frost and hit him in the face.
WLNS reports that Frost then put his gun against the teen’s chest and pulled the trigger. The gun did not fire at first, but then unjammed and fired seven shots at close range in four seconds. Guilford died at the scene, while Frost was injured and hospitalized.
According to the Detroit Free Press, in their lawsuit, the teen’s family is seeking a jury trial but no monetary damages. The lawsuit says Frost’s “entire course of action was illegal and in violation of Deven’s constitutional rights.”
